It directly references the historic Grand Tour – the traditional ‘rites-of-passage’ form of travel by upper-class young European men first begun in the 17th Century. The tour was a programme of new work by Gayle Chong Kwan presented at mac, Birmingham; Arts Co, London, Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto, Italy; and ArtSway, Hampshire. Gayle Chong Kwan, Chelsea Street, The Land of Peach Blossom (series), 2008

‘The Land of Peach Blossoms’ is a mythical large-scale housing development located high in the mountains and carved in miniature out of used plastic food packaging materials. It develops out of research in the UK and China, on the Grice Collection in Sheffield, ivory carving techniques, masterplanning developments which use ‘British’ architectural themes, such as Thames Town in Shanghai, as well as the chinoiserie in the UK.
‘The Land of Peach Blossoms’ transforms the myth of a peaceful land far away from the turmoils of the world into a 21st century housing development, a mountain top gated-community. The installation comprises large sculptural architectural models of the housing development carved from used plastic food packaging. Large-format photographic works are installed like landscape panels on the walls, which focus in on details and also reflecting miniature Chinese mountain landscape panels.

Series of 28 c-type lambda prints, 20 x 24″

A series of twenty-eight photographs which document, over two month period, the temporary structures which Mauritians erect on one of the few remaining public beaches, Mont Choisy, on the island.  The temporary structures are erected on the traditional causarina trees, which are being cut down and replaced by palm trees on many parts of the coast, to create beaches which are seen as more in keeping with the image of of the ‘paradise island’ for the tourist industry. Many of the large hotel complexes are still legally and theoretically able to be used by locals, as long as they enter the beaches from the sea, but in reality the presence of hotel security guards deter this.

A series of twelve large-format photographs based on 14th Century ideas of a glutton’s paradise. Each depicts a mythical landscape constructed from a single foodstuff, which appear enticing but on closer inspection verge on the repellent, the cheese in ‘Resort’ is plastic and slimy, the dried meat in ‘Babel’ beginning to sweat. Exploring the exotic in tourism, myth and Fine Art, the scenes share horizons; visually linking up into a fantastical landscape reminiscent of scenarios created by Dufour in the 19th Century.
